But the afternoon did not start well for them at Old Trafford when Willian opened the first-half scoring for the visitors.
Romelu Lukaku levelled proceedings moments after though to make it all-square going into the break.
And the Belgium striker turned provider on 75 minutes when substitute Lingard headed home a cross to seal three vital points for the hosts.
