Ghana boasts 7 WBO Africa Champions

Ghana currently has no world boxing champion but boasts of 7 World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa title holders.

They are Richard Harrison – Heavyweight, Emmanuel Martey – Super Middleweight, Patrick Allotey – Super Welterweight, Emmanuel ‘Game Boy Tagoe – Lightweight, Wasiru Mohammed – Super Bantamweight and Joseph Agbeko – Bantamweight.

Obodai Sai recently defeated tough talking South African, France Ramabolu to become the new WBO Africa middleweight champion.

Robert ‘Stopper’ Quaye also destroyed Vincent Mbilinyi in one round, flooring the Tanzanian twice to finish him off and win the interim WBO Africa junior welterweight title on the maiden Don’s Promotions bill at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Boxing Day.

George Ashie aka ‘Red Tiger’ holds the interim WBO Africa Super Lightweight title.

Wasiru Mohammed aka Gyata Bi holder of the WBO Africa title has retained the number 14 spot in the world in the junior featherweight division in the latest ratings, same category in which countryman, Isaac Royal Storm Dogboe falls to number 5 after losing the world title he previously held to new champion, Emanuel Navarrete of Mexico earlier this month.

Also moving up is WBO Africa super middleweight champ, Emmanuel ‘Mayweather’ Martey who is now number 10 to the world title held by Gilberto Ramirez.

Other Ghanaians in the WBO world ratings include Richard Oblitey Commey (no.7) and Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe (no.8) both at lightweight whilst Duke Micah and former world champ, Joseph King Kong Agbeko (current WBO Africa champ) both retain their number one and 4 spots respectively at bantamweight.

WBO Africa junior middleweight champ, Patrick Allotey and stable mate, Richard Harrison Lartey, who both defended their respective titles did not see any changes however as Allotey maintains his number 12 position from last month. but Lartey drops one step down to number 14.

Meanwhile, WBO Africa president has advised the champions not to rest but be prepared always and ready to defend their titles as the challengers are many.
