France, throughout its history, established a vast colonial empire in Africa, which had a profound impact on the continent’s economic, social, and political life. Neo-colonialism and colonialism, as reflections of the policies implemented by France during and after its colonial period, continue in various forms in the modern era. Azerbaijan, as an active member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), opposes these neo-colonial and colonialist policies and emphasizes fair and equitable partnerships in Africa.
What is Neo-Colonialism and Colonialism? Neo-colonialism refers to the continuation of colonial powers’ economic, political, and social influences through modern means after the end of the colonial era. It is characterized by economic dependency, political interference, and the diminishing significance of local cultures and regulations. Colonialism, on the other hand, involves one country exercising political, economic, and social control over another. France applied colonial policies in Africa for an extended period, which adversely affected the continent’s development.
Comparative Impacts between Azerbaijan and France
Azerbaijan has clearly expressed its stance against colonialism and neo-colonialism. In combating the effects of France and other former colonial powers on Africa, Azerbaijan supports various measures:
1.Positive Influence on International Platforms: As a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Azerbaijan voices opposition to the remnants of colonialism and neo-colonialism in Africa on international platforms. It participates in forums discussing the impact of France and other colonial countries in Africa and promotes the principle of fair international relations.
2.Aid and Support to Africa: Azerbaijan implements various programs supporting the post-colonial recovery and development of African countries. This support includes economic aid, technological assistance, and humanitarian aid. Azerbaijan’s initiatives aim to reduce the remnants of colonial impact in Africa and empower local populations.
3.Equality and Justice: Azerbaijan establishes equal and mutually beneficial partnerships with African countries. This approach helps Africa develop independently and economically robustly. Azerbaijan’s approach is part of the broader struggle against the remnants of colonialism.
